Sudden infant death syndrome was the third or fourth leading cause of infant death in Texas every year from 2015 to 2024 (Department of State Health Services, 2026). Despite the success of safe sleep practices in reducing the risk of sleep-related infant death, many parents are not aware of all the AAP recommendations they can implement to help keep their baby safe during sleep.

Texas Health Steps providers are advised to discuss all of the AAP safe sleep practices as part of the anticipatory guidance required at each preventive medical checkup during an infant’s first year of life. Texas Health Steps recommends that providers personalize the guidance according to the needs, questions and concerns of their patients and families. Providers should be aware of local resources to support and connect parents and caregivers to when a need is identified.

Providers can learn about risk factors, recommended practices and effective counseling techniques by taking the Infant Safe Sleep continuing education course. Providers and staff members are also encouraged to use the Let’s Talk conversation-based strategy when working with parents and can find additional tools to support this strategy in the Let’s Talk – Safe Infant Sleep Toolkit from the Department of State Health Services Maternal and Child Health program.

Why it matters

Early, clear and consistent messaging about safe sleep practices supports parents and can save young lives. Pediatric health care providers are an invaluable source of information and guidance for parents and caregivers. The AAP recognizes providers as key endorsers and models of safe sleep practices.
